Um pouco mais sobre mimA bit more about me

Durante todo o ensino médio eu não fazia muita ideia do que queria fazer depois. Não tinha uma profissão na cabeça nem um plano muito bem definido. O que eu sabia era que eu gostava de matemática, de lógica e de problemas que obrigam a parar e pensar de verdade. Na época eu não sabia exatamente onde isso poderia me levar, só sabia que queria continuar perto desse tipo de coisa.Throughout high school I did not really know what I wanted to do afterward. I did not have a profession in mind, nor a well-defined plan. What I did know was that I liked mathematics, logic and problems that force you to stop and really think. At the time I did not know exactly where that could take me, I just knew I wanted to stay close to that kind of thing.

Ciência da Computação começou a aparecer mais para o meio e o fim do terceiro ano. Muito disso veio de amigos que tinham gostos parecidos com os meus, mas que já sabiam bem melhor o que queriam fazer.Computer Science started coming up more around the middle and end of my senior year. Much of that came from friends who had similar interests to mine, but who already knew much better what they wanted to do.

Um desses amigos teve bastante influência nisso. Foi por causa dele que eu conheci algumas olimpíadas de matemática que fugiam um pouco daquela coisa de decorar fórmula e aplicar. Eram problemas em que você realmente precisava pensar, testar uma ideia, perceber que não funcionava e tentar outra. Eu gostava disso e comecei a participar de algumas competições.One of these friends had a lot of influence on that. It was because of him that I got to know some math olympiads that got away a bit from that thing of memorizing a formula and applying it. They were problems where you really had to think, test an idea, realize it did not work and try another one. I liked that and started taking part in some competitions.

Acho que isso ajudou a deixar um pouco mais claro para mim que eu gostava de me envolver com isso.I think that helped make it a bit clearer to me that I liked getting involved with that kind of thing.

Foi também com esse amigo que conheci a UFPR pela primeira vez de verdade. A gente foi até o Centro Politécnico, ficou andando pelo campus e almoçou no RU. Não foi nenhum grande acontecimento, mas eu lembro bastante desse dia porque foi a primeira vez que conheci e que consegui me imaginar estudando numa universidade. Por mais que eu sabia que provavelmente faria uma, não tinha de verdade uma imagem muito concreta disso.It was also with that friend that I got to know UFPR for the first time, for real. We went to the Centro Politécnico, walked around campus and had lunch at the university cafeteria. It was not a big event, but I remember that day a lot, because it was the first time I visited a university and could actually picture myself studying at one. Even though I knew I would probably go to one, I did not really have a very concrete image of it.

Ali eu realmente senti que queria fazer parte disso, só que o curso era outra questão.Right there I really felt that I wanted to be part of that, it was just that the course was a different matter.

Se alguém me perguntasse naquela época, eu provavelmente diria que queria Ciência da Computação. Mas, sendo sincero, eu estava bem dividido.If someone had asked me back then, I would probably have said I wanted Computer Science. But, to be honest, I was quite torn.

Matemática sempre foi uma possibilidade porque era uma área de que eu realmente gostava. Engenharia Elétrica ou alguma coisa ligada à eletrônica também me interessava pela parte mais prática e pela ideia de construir e entender sistemas físicos. E Ciência da Computação parecia misturar lógica, criação e tecnologia de um jeito que me atraía bastante, só que eu ainda praticamente não sabia nada do curso.Mathematics was always a possibility because it was a field I truly liked. Electrical Engineering or something related to electronics also interested me for its more practical side and for the idea of building and understanding physical systems. And Computer Science seemed to mix logic, creation and technology in a way that appealed to me a lot, except I still practically knew nothing about the course.

Eu sempre gostei de ensinar também.I have always liked teaching too.

Ainda no ensino fundamental e depois no ensino médio, comecei a dar algumas aulas particulares de matemática. Na época eu nem pensava nisso como algo importante da minha trajetória, eu só gostava mesmo. Gostava de preparar exercícios, pensar em um jeito de explicar e, quando a pessoa não entendia, tentar de novo de outra forma. Me considero alguém paciente.Back in middle school and later in high school, I started giving some private mathematics tutoring. At the time I did not even think of it as something important to my path, I just genuinely liked it. I liked preparing exercises, thinking of a way to explain something and, when the person did not understand, trying again in a different way. I consider myself a patient person.

Isso acabou pesando mais do que eu imaginava quando precisei escolher um curso.That ended up weighing more than I imagined when I had to choose a course.

No fim de 2023 fiz o vestibular da UFPR para Ciência da Computação.At the end of 2023 I took the UFPR entrance exam for Computer Science.

Era meu primeiro vestibular de verdade e eu fui um pouco confiante demais. Sempre tinha ido bem na escola e nos simulados, então fui adiando os estudos achando que daria para resolver. Não deu.It was my first real entrance exam and I was a bit too confident. I had always done well in school and on mock exams, so I kept putting off studying, thinking I could still pull it off. I could not.

Cheguei relativamente longe, mas não passei.I got relatively far, but I did not get in.

E, na época, eu nem fiquei tão mal.And, at the time, I did not even feel that bad about it.

Claro que eu queria ter passado, mas ainda existia aquela dúvida sobre o curso. Eu gostava da ideia de Ciência da Computação, só que ainda não tinha tido contato suficiente com a área para pensar “é isso, preciso estar nesse curso”.Of course I wanted to have gotten in, but that doubt about the course was still there. I liked the idea of Computer Science, except I still had not had enough contact with the field to think “this is it, I need to be in this course”.

Também fiz o ENEM e, quando chegou a hora de escolher, fiquei principalmente entre Engenharia Elétrica e Licenciatura em Matemática na UFPR.I also took the ENEM, and when it came time to choose, I was mainly torn between Electrical Engineering and a Mathematics teaching degree at UFPR.

No fim escolhi Matemática.In the end I chose Mathematics.

Eu gostava da área, gostava de ensinar e, naquele momento, era uma escolha que fazia bastante sentido para mim.I liked the field, I liked teaching, and at that moment it was a choice that made a lot of sense to me.

UFPR

Comecei Matemática no início de 2024.I started Mathematics at the beginning of 2024.

E eu gostei muito da faculdade.And I liked university a lot.

Foi uma mudança enorme em relação ao colégio. As aulas eram diferentes, os assuntos eram mais interessantes, eu tinha muito mais liberdade e parecia que sempre tinha alguma coisa acontecendo ou alguma coisa nova para conhecer.It was a huge change from high school. The classes were different, the subjects were more interesting, I had a lot more freedom, and it felt like there was always something happening or something new to discover.

Acho que eu tinha aquela empolgação clássica de calouro de achar legal até simplesmente estar no campus. Mesmo que até hoje eu goste bastante de estar no campus.I think I had that classic freshman excitement of finding it cool just to be on campus. Even though, to this day, I still really like being on campus.

Mas não era só isso. Eu gostava do curso também.But it was not just that. I liked the course too.

E faço questão de enfatizar isso porque não é como se Matemática tivesse sido um erro e eu tivesse passado dois anos só esperando conseguir sair.And I want to make a point of emphasizing that, because it is not as if Mathematics had been a mistake and I had spent two years just waiting to be able to leave.

Eu gostava das matérias, gostava do que aprendia e estava feliz no curso. Até hoje gosto bastante de matemática e acho que esses dois anos foram muito importantes para mim.I liked the courses, I liked what I was learning, and I was happy in the program. To this day I still like mathematics a lot, and I think those two years were very important to me.

Enquanto isso, aquele meu amigo que tinha me apresentado à UFPR estava cursando Ciência da Computação.Meanwhile, that friend of mine who had introduced me to UFPR was studying Computer Science.

Como a gente ainda tinha contato, eu acabava ouvindo bastante sobre o curso, as matérias, os professores e as coisas que eles estavam fazendo. E, conforme eu conhecia mais, a vontade de experimentar Computação também ia aumentando.Since we were still in touch, I ended up hearing a lot about the course, the classes, the professors and the things they were working on. And as I learned more, the urge to try Computing also kept growing.

Então resolvi pegar algumas disciplinas do curso.So I decided to take a few courses from the program.

Minha ideia era basicamente fazer algumas matérias e ver se eu gostava. Se não gostasse, pelo menos serviria como matéria optativa do curso. E, se no fim eu realmente quisesse trocar, ainda teria a vantagem de já ter adiantado as disciplinas.My idea was basically to take a few courses and see if I liked it. If I did not, they would at least count as elective credit for my program. And if in the end I really wanted to switch, I would still have the advantage of having already gotten those courses out of the way.

Por isso, no segundo semestre de 2024 peguei Algoritmos e Estruturas de Dados I.So, in the second semester of 2024, I took Algorithms and Data Structures I.

E aí a situação mudou bastante.And that is when things changed quite a bit.

Até aquele momento eu achava a ideia de programação legal. Depois de Alg I, eu sabia que gostava de programar.Up until that point I thought the idea of programming was cool. After Algorithms I, I knew I liked programming.

Eu gostei muito da matéria e tive a sorte de pegar um professor muito bom. Ele tinha uma didática que funcionava muito bem para mim e, mesmo eu não sendo do curso, sempre me incentivava a participar das aulas.I liked the course a lot and was lucky enough to get a very good professor. He had a teaching style that worked really well for me and, even though I was not from the program, he always encouraged me to take part in class.

Tenho bastante carinho por ele até hoje.I still hold a lot of affection for him to this day.

Foi a primeira vez que eu realmente entendi o que me atraía tanto em programação.It was the first time I truly understood what attracted me so much to programming.

Tinha a parte lógica que eu já gostava, tinha resolução de problemas, mas também tinha uma liberdade criativa que eu não acho que tenha da mesma forma em outras áreas.There was the logical side that I already liked, there was problem solving, but there was also a creative freedom that I do not think exists in the same way in other fields.

Você recebe um problema e não existe necessariamente uma única maneira de resolver. Dá para pensar, testar caminhos diferentes e construir uma solução do seu jeito. E, no final, aquilo vira alguma coisa sua que realmente funciona.You are given a problem and there is not necessarily a single way to solve it. You can think it through, try different paths and build a solution your own way. And in the end, that becomes something of yours that actually works.

Foi nessa disciplina que eu parei de pensar “talvez eu queira Ciência da Computação” e comecei a pensar “eu quero trocar de curso”.It was in that course that I stopped thinking “maybe I want Computer Science” and started thinking “I want to change majors”.

Só que eu ainda gostava do curso de Matemática.Except I still liked the Mathematics program.

Então não quis tomar uma decisão com base em uma única matéria. Continuei pegando mais disciplinas de Ciência da Computação para ter certeza.So I did not want to make a decision based on a single course. I kept taking more Computer Science courses to be sure.

Em 2025 fiz o máximo de matérias que consegui conciliar entre as duas graduações.In 2025 I took as many courses as I could manage to fit between the two degrees.

E foi ficando cada vez mais certo que eu queria trocar.And it became more and more certain that I wanted to switch.

SENAI / Petrobras

Mais ou menos no mesmo período, apareceu outra coisa completamente diferente.Around that same time, something completely different came up.

Na metade de 2024, minha mãe e meu tio me mostraram um processo seletivo para um programa de aprendizagem da Petrobras na área de eletroeletrônica.In the middle of 2024, my mother and my uncle showed me a selection process for a Petrobras apprenticeship program in electrical and electronics.

Elétrica e eletrônica já estavam naquele grupo de coisas que sempre tinham chamado minha atenção, mesmo sem eu ter estudado muito sobre elas. Então pensei que valia a pena tentar.Electrical work and electronics were already part of that group of things that had always caught my attention, even though I had not studied them much. So I thought it was worth a try.

Me inscrevi, passei pelo processo e, em setembro de 2024, comecei como aprendiz.I applied, made it through the process, and in September 2024 I started as an apprentice.

Foi meu primeiro emprego formal.It was my first formal job.

Antes disso eu já tinha dado aulas particulares e também tinha trabalhado com meu tio na marcenaria, mas era a primeira vez que eu entrava em uma empresa daquele tamanho e tinha contato com um ambiente industrial.Before that I had already given private tutoring and also worked with my uncle in his carpentry shop, but it was the first time I was entering a company of that size and had contact with an industrial environment.

A formação passava por bastante coisa: controladores lógicos, instalações elétricas, eletrônica, automação industrial, manutenção, desenho técnico, projetos e outras áreas.The training covered a lot of ground: programmable logic controllers, electrical installations, electronics, industrial automation, maintenance, technical drawing, projects and other areas.

Enquanto de tarde eu estava na UFPR vendo algoritmos, matemática e programação, de manhã estava mexendo com motores elétricos, pneumática, hidráulica e equipamentos que até então eu não sabia nem o nome.While in the afternoon I was at UFPR studying algorithms, mathematics and programming, in the morning I was working with electric motors, pneumatics, hydraulics and equipment I did not even know the name of until then.

Era uma rotina bem diversa.It was a pretty diverse routine.

Mas eu estava aprendendo bastante e gostava disso.But I was learning a lot and I liked it.

O SENAI e a Petrobras também foram importantes por um motivo bem menos acadêmico. Fiz amigos nesse período com quem continuo falando até hoje e que quero levar para a vida.SENAI and Petrobras were also important for a much less academic reason. I made friends during that time who I still talk to today and who I want to keep for life.

Durante boa parte de 2025 minha vida estava mais ou menos assim.For most of 2025, my life was more or less like that.

Só que tinha uma coisa me incomodando.Except there was one thing bothering me.

Eu já tinha certeza de que queria trocar de curso.I was already sure that I wanted to change majors.

Só ainda não tinha conseguido.I just had not managed to yet.

Em 2024 eu tentei o vestibular da UFPR novamente.In 2024 I tried the UFPR entrance exam again.

Fui longe mais uma vez, passando para a segunda fase, mas não consegui.I got far again, making it to the second phase, but I did not make it.

Dessa vez pesou mais.This time it weighed more heavily.

Na primeira tentativa eu ainda estava cheio de dúvidas. Nessa não.In the first attempt I was still full of doubts. Not this time.

E eu também sabia que não tinha estudado para o vestibular tanto quanto poderia.And I also knew I had not studied for the exam as much as I could have.

Então me cobrei bastante.So I was very hard on myself.

Ao mesmo tempo, também não era como se minha vida estivesse parada esperando isso acontecer. Eu gostava de Matemática, estava fazendo disciplinas de Ciência da Computação e trabalhava na Petrobras.At the same time, it was not as if my life was standing still waiting for that to happen. I liked Mathematics, I was taking Computer Science courses, and I worked at Petrobras.

Mas, mesmo assim, queria mudar.But, even so, I wanted a change.

Em 2025 abriu o PROVAR, que é um processo seletivo da própria UFPR e que, entre outras possibilidades, permite trocar de curso.In 2025, PROVAR opened up, which is a selection process run by UFPR itself that, among other possibilities, allows students to change majors.

Não sabia muito bem como funcionava, mas fui ver. Tinham quatro vagas para Ciência da Computação.I did not really know how it worked, but I went to check it out. There were four spots for Computer Science.

Não estava muito confiante. Minha cabeça ainda estava muito mais no próximo vestibular. Mesmo assim, me inscrevi.I was not very confident. My mind was still much more on the next entrance exam. Even so, I applied.

E continuei fazendo o que já estava fazendo.And I kept doing what I was already doing.

Faculdade, Petrobras, estudos, matérias de Computação.University, Petrobras, studying, Computing courses.

Naquela época eu estava bem mais frustrado com os resultados anteriores e me cobrava bastante. Também tinham algumas coisas pessoais acontecendo e não foi exatamente o período mais tranquilo para mim.At that time I was much more frustrated with my previous results and was very hard on myself. There were also some personal things going on, and it was not exactly the calmest period for me.

Mas, depois que decidi que queria trocar de curso, eu meio que assumi para mim mesmo que, de algum jeito, eu ia conseguir.But after I decided I wanted to change majors, I sort of made a promise to myself that, somehow, I was going to make it happen.

No fim de 2025, algumas semanas antes do vestibular, saiu o resultado do PROVAR.At the end of 2025, a few weeks before the entrance exam, the PROVAR results came out.

Eu estava dentro das quatro vagas.I was one of the four spots.

Tinha finalmente conseguido.I had finally made it.

E uma coisa que acho meio triste olhando para trás é que eu não comemorei tanto quanto deveria.And a thing I find a bit sad looking back is that I did not celebrate as much as I should have.

Eu fiquei feliz, obviamente, mas na minha cabeça ainda existia muito aquela cobrança de “você tinha obrigação de conseguir”. Como eu acreditava que tinha capacidade para entrar, eu acabei tratando a aprovação menos como uma conquista e mais como uma coisa que já deveria ter acontecido antes.I was happy, obviously, but in my head there was still a lot of that pressure of “you were supposed to make it”. Since I believed I had the ability to get in, I ended up treating the acceptance less like an achievement and more like something that should have already happened earlier.

Hoje eu tento não pensar tanto assim.Today I try not to think that way as much.

Eu tinha conseguido entrar no curso que queria havia mais de um ano. Isso por si só já merecia ter sido muito mais comemorado.I had gotten into the course I wanted for over a year already. That alone deserved to have been celebrated a lot more.

Em 2026 comecei oficialmente no Bacharelado em Ciência da Computação.In 2026 I officially started the Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.

Enquanto estava em Matemática, eu tinha feito oito disciplinas de Ciência da Computação. Pedi equivalência de tudo e isso resultou numa grade completamente bagunçada, que ainda está se ajeitando.While I was in Mathematics, I had taken eight Computer Science courses. I requested equivalency for all of them, and that resulted in a completely scrambled schedule, which is still sorting itself out.

Mas eu também não cheguei completamente como calouro.But I also did not arrive completely as a freshman.

Não vejo aqueles dois anos que fiz de matemática como atraso, desvio ou tempo perdido. Aprendi muito e construí uma base matemática que provavelmente não teria se tivesse entrado direto em Ciência da Computação.I do not see those two years I spent in Mathematics as a delay, a detour or wasted time. I learned a lot and built a mathematical foundation that I probably would not have if I had gone straight into Computer Science.

E algumas coisas curiosamente se conectaram de um jeito que eu não esperava.And some things curiously connected in a way I did not expect.

Por exemplo, nas matérias mais voltadas para o hardware, comecei a reencontrar assuntos que tinham aparecido no SENAI e Petrobras, só que agora dentro de Computação.For example, in the more hardware-oriented courses, I started running back into subjects that had come up at SENAI and Petrobras, except now inside Computing.

Daí surgiu uma das coisas que ainda estou fazendo hoje: tentar construir um computador de 8 bits.That is where one of the things I am still working on today came from: trying to build an 8-bit computer.

Acho interessante olhar assim porque eu via Matemática, eletrônica e Computação como três caminhos entre os quais eu precisava escolher.I find it interesting to look at it that way, because I used to see Mathematics, electronics and Computing as three paths between which I had to choose.

Ainda precisei escolher, mas no fim, eles acabaram se misturando bem mais do que eu imaginava.I still had to choose, but in the end, they ended up mixing together much more than I imagined.

No meu primeiro semestre oficialmente em Ciência da Computação, eu decidi que queria tentar uma monitoria.In my first semester officially in Computer Science, I decided I wanted to try being a teaching assistant.

Tinham duas disciplinas que me interessavam: Cálculo e Fundamentos de Programação.There were two courses that interested me: Calculus and Programming Fundamentals.

Cálculo fazia bastante sentido. Eu vinha de Matemática, já tinha dado aulas particulares e tinha bastante familiaridade com o conteúdo.Calculus made a lot of sense. I was coming from Mathematics, had already given private tutoring, and was quite familiar with the content.

Mas Fundamentos me interessou mais.But Fundamentals interested me more.

Eu poderia continuar fazendo algo de que sempre gostei, que era ensinar, mas agora com programação. E ainda teria a vantagem de aprender melhor alguns conceitos enquanto explicava para outras pessoas.I could keep doing something I had always liked, which was teaching, but now with programming. And I would still have the advantage of learning some concepts better while explaining them to other people.

Fiz o processo seletivo para as duas.I went through the selection process for both.

Passei e escolhi seguir com Fundamentos de Programação.I passed and chose to go with Programming Fundamentals.

E aqui tem mais daquelas coisas que curiosamente se conectam.And here comes another one of those things that curiously connect.

Para ser monitor, uma das exigências era já ter feito a disciplina e ter tirado uma boa nota.To be a teaching assistant, one of the requirements was to have already taken the course and gotten a good grade.

Só que Fundamentos de Programação nem faz parte da grade do Bacharelado em Ciência da Computação.Except Programming Fundamentals is not even part of the Bachelor's in Computer Science curriculum.

Eu só podia ser monitor dela porque tinha cursado a matéria quando ainda estava em Matemática.I could only be its teaching assistant because I had taken the course back when I was still in Mathematics.

Na época eu não tinha feito aquela disciplina pensando “isso vai ser útil quando eu virar monitor de programação”. Eu só fiz.At the time I had not taken that course thinking “this is going to be useful when I become a programming teaching assistant”. I just took it.

E depois ela acabou aparecendo de novo.And later it ended up coming back around.

Durante o semestre fui monitor bolsista e atendia alunos de vários cursos.During the semester I was a paid teaching assistant and helped students from several different programs.

Uma das coisas boas que ensinar traz é que você acaba percebendo coisas que você mesmo não entende direito. Quando eu achava que sabia alguma coisa, mas não conseguia explicar de um jeito simples, normalmente tinha algum buraco ali.One of the good things teaching brings is that you end up noticing things you yourself do not fully understand. Whenever I thought I knew something but could not explain it simply, there was usually some gap there.

Foi durante a monitoria que eu comecei a pensar em criar um material para a disciplina.It was during the teaching assistantship that I started thinking about creating material for the course.

Mas, olhando para trás, isso também não surgiu exatamente ali.But, looking back, that did not exactly start there either.

Eu já fazia esse tipo de coisa havia bastante tempo.I had already been doing that kind of thing for quite a while.

Quando dava aulas particulares, gostava de preparar listas, pequenos guias e apresentações. Na faculdade, quando algum amigo me pedia ajuda em Matemática, eu normalmente acabava procurando exercícios, juntando materiais ou escrevendo alguma explicação.When I gave private tutoring, I liked preparing worksheets, small guides and presentations. In college, whenever a friend asked me for help with Mathematics, I would usually end up looking for exercises, gathering materials or writing up some explanation.

Em 2024, inclusive, comecei um guia de Matemática para ajudar alguns colegas que precisavam estudar para um processo seletivo.In 2024, in fact, I started a Mathematics guide to help some colleagues who needed to study for a selection process.

A ideia inicial era fazer uma coisa relativamente pequena.The initial idea was to make something relatively small.

Como quase sempre, a ideia deixou de ser pequena.As almost always happens, the idea stopped being small.

Comecei a querer adicionar mais assuntos, melhorar as explicações e transformar aquilo em um material muito maior. Até hoje ele está incompleto.I started wanting to add more topics, improve the explanations and turn it into a much bigger piece of material. To this day it is still unfinished.

Ainda quero terminar.I still want to finish it.

Só não sei quando.I just do not know when.

Na monitoria aconteceu uma coisa parecida.Something similar happened with the teaching assistantship.

Eu comecei pensando em organizar algumas explicações e exemplos para os alunos e, quando percebi, estava passando semanas construindo um repositório inteiro de Fundamentos de Programação.I started out thinking about organizing some explanations and examples for the students, and before I knew it, I was spending weeks building an entire repository for Programming Fundamentals.

Comecei a colocar mais exemplos, depois exercícios, códigos comentados, atividades de debugging, listas, soluções, um FAQ... Quando percebi, aquilo já tinha virado um repositório bem maior do que eu tinha imaginado no começo.I started adding more examples, then exercises, commented code, debugging activities, worksheets, solutions, a FAQ... Além de melhorar minha forma de explicar, ela me fez revisar várias coisas que eu achava que já dominava e aprender Python melhor. E, principalmente, me colocou várias vezes naquela situação de ter que admitir: “tá, eu sei fazer isso, mas será que eu realmente sei explicar por que funciona?”.Besides improving the way I explain things, it made me review a lot of things I thought I had already mastered and learn Python better. And, most importantly, it put me many times in that situation of having to admit: “okay, I know how to do this, but do I really know how to explain why it works?”.

Às vezes a resposta era não.Sometimes the answer was no.

Alguns meses antes de a monitoria acabar, uma amiga me indicou para uma vaga de estágio.A few months before the teaching assistantship ended, a friend referred me for an internship position.

Eu aceitei participar do processo, mas sem muita expectativa de que aquilo realmente fosse dar certo. Oficialmente eu estava no primeiro semestre de Ciência da Computação e geralmente a coordenação nem autorizasse um estágio antes da famosa barreira do 3º semestre.I agreed to take part in the process, but without much expectation that it would actually work out. Officially I was in my first semester of Computer Science, and the coordination usually would not even authorize an internship before the well-known third-semester barrier.

Mesmo assim, fiz a entrevista.Even so, I did the interview.

Passei.I passed.

Bom, eu tinha conseguido a vaga, mas ainda não sabia se poderia mesmo trabalhar.Well, I had gotten the position, but I still did not know if I would actually be allowed to work.

Estar na monitoria ajudou bastante no processo seletivo. A empresa trabalhava principalmente com Python, e eu estava passando boa parte da semana ensinando justamente uma disciplina de programação em Python.Being a teaching assistant helped a lot in the selection process. The company worked mainly with Python, and I was spending a good part of the week teaching exactly a Python programming course.

E aí aparece mais uma daquelas partes que eu acho curiosas quando olho para trás.And here comes another one of those parts I find curious when I look back.

Eu estava conseguindo aquela oportunidade também por causa da monitoria.I was getting that opportunity partly because of the teaching assistantship too.

E só tinha conseguido ser monitor daquela disciplina porque a tinha cursado quando ainda estava em Matemática.And I had only managed to become that course's teaching assistant because I had taken it back when I was still in Mathematics.

Não estou dizendo que, se eu tivesse entrado direto em Ciência da Computação, eu nunca teria conseguido um estágio ou que tudo aconteceu exatamente como “precisava acontecer”. Não gosto muito dessa ideia de tentar transformar qualquer coisa do passado em destino.I am not saying that, if I had gone straight into Computer Science, I would never have gotten an internship, or that everything happened exactly as it “had to happen”. I am not really fond of that idea of trying to turn anything from the past into destiny.

Provavelmente eu teria seguido outro caminho e outras oportunidades teriam aparecido.I would probably have followed a different path and other opportunities would have come up.

Mas o caminho que aconteceu foi esse. E várias coisas que eu achava que estavam ficando para trás acabaram tendo importância depois.But the path that actually happened was this one. And several things I thought were being left behind ended up mattering later on.

Ainda faltava resolver a autorização do estágio.There was still the internship authorization to sort out.

E aí aquele professor de Alg I apareceu de novo.And that is when that Algorithms I professor showed up again.

O mesmo professor que tinha sido tão importante quando eu comecei a gostar de programação fazia parte da coordenação do curso. Conversei com ele sobre a situação, ele me explicou o que eu precisava fazer e disse que ajudaria no que estivesse ao alcance dele.The same professor who had been so important when I started liking programming was part of the course coordination. I talked to him about the situation, he explained what I needed to do, and said he would help however he could.

No fim, o estágio foi aprovado.In the end, the internship was approved.

E ele virou meu orientador.And he became my advisor.

No trabalho eu também comecei a ter contato com um tipo de problema bem diferente do que estava acostumado na faculdade.At work I also started coming into contact with a very different kind of problem than what I was used to at university.

Num exercício, normalmente alguém já fez boa parte do trabalho de definir o problema para você. Você recebe uma entrada, sabe mais ou menos o que precisa produzir e começa a pensar na solução.In an exercise, someone has usually already done a good part of the work of defining the problem for you. You are given an input, you know more or less what you need to produce, and you start thinking about the solution.

No trabalho. Às vezes a primeira dificuldade é descobrir qual é o problema de verdade.At work. Sometimes the first difficulty is figuring out what the real problem even is.

Comecei a mexer em sistemas e programas gigantes que já existiam, corrigir bugs, criar automações, entender código que não fui eu que escrevi e fazer alterações sem quebrar o que já funcionava.I started working on huge systems and programs that already existed, fixing bugs, building automations, understanding code that I had not written myself, and making changes without breaking what already worked.

Também muda bastante quando aquilo que você faz vai ser usado por outra pessoa.It also changes a lot when what you build is going to be used by someone else.

Não adianta o código estar bonito se, na prática, ele não resolve o que precisava resolver.It does not matter if the code looks nice if, in practice, it does not solve what it needed to solve.

Inteligência Artificial já era uma área que me interessava antes mesmo de eu entrar oficialmente em Ciência da Computação.Artificial Intelligence was already a field that interested me even before I officially entered Computer Science.

Quando eu ainda estava em Matemática, eu já tinha bastante curiosidade sobre o assunto. E não era nem um pouco pela ideia de escrever prompts. O que me interessava era entender o que tinha por trás daquilo.When I was still in Mathematics, I already had a lot of curiosity about the subject. And it was not even a little bit about the idea of writing prompts. What interested me was understanding what was behind all of it.

Como um modelo aprende?How does a model learn?

Qual a matemática disso?What is the mathematics behind it?

Como ela pega uma quantidade enorme de informação e, de alguma forma, traduz aquilo para números?How does it take an enormous amount of information and, somehow, translate it into numbers?

Eu achava tudo isso muito interessante e sabia que, em algum momento, queria estudar a área de verdade.I found all of that very interesting, and I knew that at some point I wanted to really study the field.

No fim da monitoria apareceu essa oportunidade.That opportunity came up near the end of the teaching assistantship.

A professora responsável pela disciplina me chamou e perguntou se eu tinha interesse em fazer iniciação científica no laboratório dela. Era uma IC do CNPq na área de Inteligência Artificial Explicável.The professor in charge of the course called me and asked if I was interested in doing undergraduate research in her lab. It was a CNPq-funded research position in the field of Explainable Artificial Intelligence.

Eu aceitei.I said yes.

E logo descobri que “estudar IA” soa muito mais simples do que realmente é.And I quickly found out that “studying AI” sounds much simpler than it actually is.

Para começar a pesquisar XAI, primeiro eu precisava entender melhor os próprios modelos e fundamentos daquilo que queria explicar. Então vi redes neurais, CNNs, Transformers e uma quantidade enorme de conceitos, artigos e assuntos que eu ainda precisava aprender.To start researching XAI, I first needed to better understand the very models and fundamentals of what I wanted to explain. So I went through neural networks, CNNs, Transformers and an enormous amount of concepts, papers and subjects I still needed to learn.

E continuo precisando.And I still do.

Às vezes eu fico completamente perdido.Sometimes I get completely lost.

E acho importante falar isso porque pesquisa, pelo menos para mim até agora, está bem longe de ser aquela imagem de alguém que sabe exatamente o que está fazendo o tempo inteiro.And I think it is important to say that, because research, at least for me so far, is quite far from that image of someone who knows exactly what they are doing all the time.

Grande parte do tempo eu estou tentando entender.Most of the time I am trying to understand.

Lendo, testando, voltando, percebendo que entendi alguma coisa errado e tentando de novo.Reading, testing, going back, realizing I understood something wrong and trying again.

Mesmo assim, é uma experiência de que gosto muito e da qual tenho bastante orgulho.Even so, it is an experience I really enjoy and am quite proud of.

Tem algo satisfatório em estudar um assunto em que a resposta não está simplesmente no próximo capítulo de um livro.There is something satisfying about studying a subject where the answer is not simply in the next chapter of a book.

Confesso que acho um pouco complicado conciliar isso com faculdade e trabalho, e ainda estou aprendendo a fazer pesquisa. Mas é uma oportunidade que eu não deixaria passar.I confess I find it a bit hard to balance that with university and work, and I am still learning how to do research. But it is an opportunity I would not pass up.

E uma coisa legal é que a pesquisa começou a voltar para o trabalho também.And a nice thing is that the research started feeding back into work too.

Conforme fui aprendendo mais sobre visão computacional e Inteligência Artificial na IC, comecei a conseguir contribuir mais nessa área dentro da empresa.As I learned more about computer vision and Artificial Intelligence in the undergraduate research, I started being able to contribute more in that area within the company.

Hoje sou um dos responsáveis pela parte de IA e venho trabalhando em melhorar o desempenho dos modelos que usamos.Today I am one of the people responsible for the AI side and have been working on improving the performance of the models we use.

Então aquela divisão entre “o que eu estudo” e “o que eu faço no trabalho” ficou um pouco menor.So that divide between “what I study” and “what I do at work” got a bit smaller.

Ainda são contextos bem diferentes, mas uma coisa começou a ajudar a outra.They are still quite different contexts, but one thing started helping the other.

Boa parte da minha rotina realmente está ocupada com faculdade, estágio e pesquisa, mas tem várias coisas que gosto de fazer quando não estou pensando nisso.A good part of my routine really is taken up by university, the internship and research, but there are several things I like to do when I am not thinking about any of that.

Uma delas é tocar violão.One of them is playing guitar.

Ainda estou longe de tocar tão bem quanto gostaria, mas gosto bastante. Tem épocas em que toco mais, outras em que o violão fica parado por alguns dias até eu lembrar que deveria voltar, mas é uma coisa que sempre acaba reaparecendo.I am still far from playing as well as I would like, but I enjoy it a lot. There are stretches when I play more, others when the guitar sits untouched for a few days until I remember I should get back to it, but it is something that always ends up coming back.

Filmes também entram bastante nisso, gosto bastante de ir ao cinema. Também acompanho futebol, tento ler quando consigo e, no geral, tenho várias coisas que gosto simplesmente porque gosto.Films are also a big part of that, I really like going to the movies. I also follow football, try to read when I can, and in general I have several things I like simply because I like them.

Hoje estou no segundo semestre do Bacharelado em Ciência da Computação.Right now I am in my second semester of the Bachelor's in Computer Science.

Faço iniciação científica em Inteligência Artificial Explicável, trabalho com desenvolvimento de software e continuo tentando conciliar tudo isso com a faculdade e com o resto da vida.I do undergraduate research in Explainable Artificial Intelligence, work with software development, and keep trying to balance all of that with university and the rest of life.

Quando paro para olhar a história toda, acho engraçado como várias coisas foram voltando.When I stop to look at the whole story, I find it funny how several things kept coming back around.

Durante bastante tempo eu me cobrei por não ter entrado em Ciência da Computação antes. Principalmente depois que tive certeza de que queria o curso, eu ficava pensando que deveria ter estudado mais para o vestibular, que deveria ter conseguido antes e que talvez estivesse “atrasado”.For a long time I was hard on myself for not having gotten into Computer Science sooner. Especially after I became sure that I wanted the course, I kept thinking that I should have studied more for the entrance exam, that I should have made it earlier, and that maybe I was “behind”.

Hoje isso me incomoda bem menos.Today that bothers me a lot less.

Eu gostei de Matemática.I liked Mathematics.

Aprendi muita coisa lá e construí uma base que ainda uso. Também foi por estar naquele curso que algumas oportunidades apareceram da forma que apareceram.I learned a lot there and built a foundation I still use. It was also because I was in that program that some opportunities came about the way they did.

O mesmo vale para o SENAI e para a Petrobras. Eu poderia olhar para eletroeletrônica como uma área que acabei não seguindo profissionalmente, mas não sinto que tenha sido tempo perdido nem de longe. Aprendi muita coisa, fiz amigos e continuo gostando da área.The same goes for SENAI and Petrobras. I could look at electrical and electronics as a field I ended up not pursuing professionally, but I do not feel it was wasted time, not even close. I learned a lot, made friends, and still like the field.

Ainda estou bem no começo. Tem muita coisa que quero estudar, áreas que mal conheço, muito que preciso aprender no trabalho e uma pesquisa em que frequentemente ainda me sinto perdido.I am still quite at the beginning. There is a lot I want to study, fields I barely know, a lot I still need to learn at work, and a research project where I frequently still feel lost.

Quero crescer muito na área, aprender a fazer coisas que hoje ainda estão completamente fora do meu alcance e participar de projetos e pesquisas de que realmente me orgulhe. Gosto de construir coisas, gosto de resolver problemas e continuo gostando muito de ensinar e ajudar quando sei alguma coisa que pode ser útil para outra pessoa.I want to grow a lot in the field, learn to do things that today are still completely out of my reach, and take part in projects and research I can truly be proud of. I like building things, I like solving problems, and I still really like teaching and helping whenever I know something that can be useful to someone else.

Provavelmente muita coisa vai mudar nos próximos anos.A lot will probably change over the next few years.
